The Bobby Sands Memorial in Hartford, CT

The Bobby Sands memorial in Hartford, CT, stands as a tribute to the men and women who sacrificed their lives for freedom. In 1981, 10 Irish Republicans began an IRA hunger strike in what used to be called the Long Kesh Detention Center in Northern Ireland. Led by Bobby Sands, these brave souls were courageous enough to give their lives in the fight to gain political prisoner status.

THE BOBBY SANDS CIRCLE TRUST maintains the memory and upkeep of the Celtic Cross that carries the names of the hunger strikers. The local chapter of the Irish American Committee (INAC) honors their memory with activities and events supporting the struggle for freedom, justice, and self-determination for all the people of Ireland. They support the families of political prisoners. And they work to educate the public here in Hartford.
